Why is Mercury both lord and exalted in Kanya?
Kanya is the one sign where a planet is exalted in its own house. Parashara gives Mercury all three of its dignities here and divides the sign between them: the first 15 degrees are its exaltation zone, the next 5 are its mulatrikona, and the last 10 are simply its own house. Its deepest exaltation falls at the 15th degree. The same sign is where Venus is debilitated, most deeply at 27 degrees, because a planet falls in the sign opposite its exaltation and Venus is exalted in Meena. So a chart with Mercury in Kanya and one with Venus in Kanya are read very differently, though the Moon sign is the same.
